What is Stellar (XLM)

A Deep Dive on Stellar (XLM)

Stellar is a decentralized blockchain platform that aims to bridge the gap between traditional decentralized financial systems. Like a global financial translator, Stellar enables seamless communication between different forms of value, making peer-to-peer as well as international transactions faster and more accessible.

Overview and Purpose

Stellar serves as a decentralized Layer 1 blockchain that tackles one of finance's most persistent challenges — the fragmentation of global payment systems. While traditional payment rails are often siloed and controlled by single regions or entities, Stellar provides an open infrastructure for decentralized application (dApp) development, asset issuance, and integration with existing financial systems. The platform's primary goal is to facilitate fast and affordable transactions between any entities worldwide, with all operations verified by a decentralized network of blockchain nodes.

Network Architecture

At the heart of Stellar's technical infrastructure lies the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a unique consensus mechanism that sets it apart from traditional proof-of-work or proof-of-stake systems. Think of SCP as a trusted network of validators working together to maintain the blockchain's integrity. Rather than relying on computational power or staked assets, SCP achieves consensus through trusted nodes that validate transactions.

The system maintains three core properties:

  • Fault tolerance: The network continues operating even when some nodes fail
  • Safety: Nodes consistently agree on transaction validation
  • Liveness: Valid transactions can proceed without interference from problematic nodes

With block times of just 3-5 seconds and a theoretical throughput of up to 4,000 transactions per second, Stellar's architecture prioritizes speed and efficiency. The network also supports smart contract functionality, enabling developers to build decentralized applications on its platform.

Stellar (XLM) Token Fundamentals

The network's native currency, known as Lumens (XLM), serves as the digital fuel that powers the Stellar ecosystem. XLM plays two essential roles:

  1. Acts as a medium of exchange between users
  2. Covers blockchain transaction fees on the network

Every participant in the Stellar network must hold a minimum balance of XLM, which helps prevent spam accounts and maintain network integrity.

Supply Characteristics

Stellar's token economics underwent a significant transformation in 2019 when approximately 55 billion XLM were burned, establishing a new maximum supply cap of roughly 50 billion XLM. The initial distribution of the original 105 billion XLM tokens was structured as follows:

  • 50% (52.32B XLM): Direct development fund
  • 25% (26.16B XLM): Community allocation
  • 20% (20.93B XLM): Multiple airdrops to BTC and XRP holders
  • 3% (3.14B XLM): Stellar Development Foundation
  • 2% (2.09B XLM): Seed investor (Stripe)

Currently, about 21.25 billion XLM (42.5% of total supply) remains out of circulation, with no fixed distribution schedule.

Project Development

Stellar's journey began on July 31, 2014, when co-founders Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim launched the project. McCaleb brought significant blockchain experience to the table, having previously developed the MTGOX Bitcoin exchange and co-founded Ripple. The project secured early backing through a $3 million seed round from Stripe in September 2014 at $0.0015 per XLM, followed by an ICO in March 2015 that raised $39 million at $0.0031 per XLM.

The Stellar Development Foundation, a nonprofit organization, oversees the project's development with a mission to create equitable access to the global financial system through blockchain technology.
