ETH Restaking, powered by EigenLayer, allows you to earn additional rewards on your staked Ether (ETH) by extending cryptoeconomic security to decentralized applications (dApps) on the EigenLayer protocol. This is in addition to the rewards you earn from standard ETH staking.
To be eligible for ETH Restaking, you must:
-
Use Kraken Pro.
-
Have your account verified to the Intermediate level or above.
-
Reside in a permitted location outside of restricted countries.
-
Have ETH in your spot or staked balance on Kraken.
If the option for ETH Restaking is not visible in your account, you may not be eligible based on these criteria.
To enable ETH Restaking on Kraken:
-
You must use Kraken Pro.
-
Ensure your Kraken account is verified to the Intermediate level or above and be in a permitted location.
-
You may not use ETH restaking if you are a resident or a citizen of a prohibited location.
-
You need to have ETH in your spot or staked balance. Already staked ETH will require an additional unbonding period before being restaked with Eigenlayer.
-
Follow instructions on this page.
If ETH restaking is not showing as an option on your account, you may not be eligible.
ETH Restaking generates rewards in various EigenLayer AVS tokens, such as ETH, EIGEN, or other ERC-20 tokens. Rewards accrue daily and are paid out weekly. See this page for more details on tokens and reward rates.
ETH Restaking via EigenLayer: Offers additional rewards in AVS tokens with a potentially longer unbonding period and increased slashing risks due to the extended security responsibilities.
Standard ETH Staking: Only earns ETH rewards with a shorter unbonding period and slashing risks limited to the Ethereum network's security.
ETH restaking includes (a) a bonding time before your ETH is restaked and generates rewards and (b) an unbonding time before your ETH is unlocked and can be used again.
(a) Bonding time for restaking is the same as the bonding time for staking ETH normally (~3 days*).
(b) Unbonding time for restaking is a minimum of 7 days but may take longer depending on standard ETH unbonding times. For example:
-
When standard ETH unbonding time is 4 days, ETH restaking unbonding time is 7 days
-
When standard ETH unbonding time is 8 days, ETH restaking unbonding time is 8 days
*Varies depending on network activity. More information can be found in the Staking section.
When you restake ETH that is currently bonded in standard staking, it will first undergo an unbonding period on the Ethereum network before being restaked with EigenLayer.
-
When you unstake your assets, they will be locked during an unbonding or escrow period. During this time, you won't earn rewards, and the value of your assets could change due to market fluctuations or other factors.
-
Rewards are not guaranteed. Changes in the blockchain or network may reduce or eliminate future rewards.
-
Restaking can be vulnerable to hacks, payment defaults, or "slashing" (loss of staked funds due to errors or malicious actions).
